We all have a list of things we plan to do. Both big and small things that we know if we did would help us to grow and see positive changes in our lives. Whether that is finally using that gym membership we’ve had for years, using that planner we bought last year yet stopped using, or joining that small group at church.
We are all waiting until the right time or January so it can become a part of our New Year resolutions. However, ‘waiting until’ is the wrong perspective, when we have the opportunity right now. Do not wait until tomorrow to do something that you should do today.
Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring.
Proverbs 27:1 (ESV)
Tomorrow Is Not Promised, So Do Not Wait
This is a truth that can be hard to face at times. We do not know what tomorrow will bring; yet we act as if we do. We act as if we know we will have the opportunity to make the changes, but tomorrow is not promised.
There are things in our lives that we put off until, whether that’s until tomorrow or January because we know there are sacrifices we will have to make once we take that first step. We know that there is no turning back, and there are others around us that will hold us accountable.
I have done this more than I care to admit. I would put things off because I believed I just did not have the time. I needed to get other things in order first before starting something else. Yet, if I’m honest there is never a perfect time for anything.
There are always things and people in your life competing for time and attention. It’s up to us to decide that the changes we want to make are important enough to make now. Then adjust our routine and schedules accordingly.
Look carefully then how you walk!
Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise
Ephesians 5:15 (AMPC)
Use Wisdom Today
A few areas where it’s always important to be wise about not waiting until tomorrow to make positive changes are our health, our marriages, and our relationship with God.
God wants us to live full and abundant lives, yet when any of these areas are suffering it’s hard to do that. It is hard to take care of others when you are not taking care of yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
When was the last time you exercised, whether at the gym, in your basement, or at the park down the street? When was the last time you scheduled yourself some uninterrupted me-time? When was the last time you had a date night with the hubby?
When was the last time you sent a text to your hubby, not asking for anything, but just to tell him that you love him? When was the last time you spent quiet time with God? When was the last time you attended a small group at your church?
If the answer to any of these questions is ‘I do not know’ or ‘Never’, then it’s time to make some changes. Time to start doing the things we know we should, yet have been putting off until tomorrow. Let’s make wise decisions today using every opportunity we have because we do not know what tomorrow may bring. Do not wait until tomorrow to get it together, start today.
I’d love to hear about an area in your life that you will stop waiting until
tomorrow to get together in the comments!

I think I need to stop waiting to exercise. I have blamed everything from the gym hours to my school hours on not getting fit…

I’ve been procrastinating and slacking off lately. The energy and drive isn’t there but I am still here. I should do what I can with the time I have. Tomorrow is not a guarantee.

This is so inspiring, tomorrow is not promised and I tend to hold off on things until the next day. Looks like I need to dig a little deeper into my bible.

This is such a timely post. I will admit I am a recovering procrastinator and I am still pushing myself everyday to do better. Like I am up at 5am to finish some stuff now because I will be behind tomorrow it I push it off.

I have been putting off some work on my personal site but I realize that I need to get it going, NOW. I have decided that my revamps will all be finished by New Year’s Day. Thanks for the reminder!

My health is one area I had to stop putting off. While attending Blogalicious a couple of weeks ago, I decided that was something I was going to stop compromising on and really focus on. Since I returned home I’ve been tracking my meals and hitting the gym more frequently.

This is so good. I truly believe that time is the most valuable thing we have. It’s something we can’t get back so we must learn to use it wisely. I’m definitely working on doing what I know I need to do TODAY instead of putting it off.

I had fallen into a bit of procrastination on things in a lot of areas. I’ve made a conscious effort to do better and I must say it is paying off.

I need to stop waiting until tomorrow to get my eating habits back in shape. It affects everything from my sleep, my spirit, and my moods.

I used to put off things till tomorrow. A loss made me realize that tomorrow is not promised. It was a painful realization, but it changed my life. I made moves to be financially independent and live my life the way l want to.
Justine Y @ Little Dove says
I love the first point you made, that tomorrow is not promised. So often I run out of time to do things and I figure I’ll just do them the next day, but I never seem to have time the next day either! Yes, it’s time to start doing things now!
Kimberly Sessions says
This was right on time! You are so right, tomorrow is not promised and instead of putting things off I have to take action and go for my dreams and goals today. I don’t ever want to say that I didn’t do something when I had the chance because I thought I’d be able to do it later on. Great read!

Thank you for writing this! As someone who’s currently going through some challenges, I can definitely relate to the struggle of worrying about tomorrow or what’s to come as if I can control it. I cannot control the next moment let alone what’s going to happen in a few days or weeks. Love it!
Melissa says
Love this! It’s so true. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. I try not to put anything off.
Laura says
This is so encouraging. I find myself putting things off because I feel like I do t have enough time or other things are more important. Yet putting my marriage or myself to the wayside is never okay. I’m going to go and plan a date night with my husband today! ?
Amie says
I always push everything back and then live to regret it!!! I am in the middle of doing that very thing RIGHT now!

I love Proverbs 27:1. It reminds us to not allow our days to slip by and to take action on what really matters! Great post.

This is such a great reminder! We get so caught up in our day to day that we forget to stop and give thanks for today!
