The health and vitality of my wife, Ayanna, is essential for everything I do. Husbands need their wives to be at their best physically, spiritually, and emotionally to help me lead in our home, community, and workplace.
Yet, as the servant leader of our homes, it is our responsibility to ensure that our wives are encouraged, respected, loved, nurtured, and blessed wherever we are. Sure there are times when things are outside of our control, but that is when we go to our Father in prayer to get things right for our wives.
Proverbs is my favorite book of the Bible, so rich in wisdom, knowledge, and practicality for our everyday lives. The thirty-first chapter describes a wife of noble character.
That is the standard many husbands expect for our wives because the Word says it and that settles it. She rises early to provide for her family, has strong self-esteem, and provides executive leadership for her family. These are just a few examples of the characteristics of a Proverbs 31 wife.
She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household.
Proverbs 31:15 (NLT)
‘She gets up while it is still dark’ highlights the importance of rising early to seek the Lord in prayer as Jesus did, having a heart of gratitude for what God has done and preparing to bless her family. I’m sorry, but staying up late and letting the sunshine wake you up is not the way to go.
How can you take care of yourself and others if you are literally or figuratively sleeping? While the world is sleeping along with your children, the distractions are limited and you can focus on what really counts. It’s time to rise and shine ladies!
She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.
Proverbs 31:25 (NLT)
‘She is clothed with strength and dignity’ is so powerful to me; this is womanhood at its finest. God has given all husbands helpmates that should be strong and self-confident to complement the purposes and plans of God for our lives. I believe dignity flows out of strength. You need to be strong physically, spiritually, and emotionally to be a wife of noble character.
Watching what you eat and exercising to the best of your ability is moving the strength needle upward right along with spending time in the Word, prayer, and worship to get stronger spiritually resulting in greater self-confidence. You’ll be able to experience joy and be prepared to laugh at the days to come!
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Proverbs 31:30 (ESV)
The rewards of your noble actions are abundant! It takes a team for the dream; God didn’t design us to go at life alone, especially in marriage. There is a certain level of respect a husband achieves among leaders when he has a wife of noble character, which can open the door to further blessings for the family (Proverbs 31:23).
Most importantly, a wise wife is worthy to be praised! The decision-making that has to take place in our homes, churches, and professions are vast, to say the least; there is a lot at stake. Having a helpmate who fears the Lord enhances our obedience and leadership capabilities to accomplish His will, where a harvest awaits.
So be encouraged Proverbs 31 wife!

Thank you so much for your post! I appreciate you as a man of God who wants to do what is right and loves his wife an girls. Also that you show your appreciation to your wife and not just expect it from her. We as husband and wife need to serve each other as Christ served. It definitely makes us better people.

Wise words. May we remember how much blessing there is in the attributes

I’m sure you both have a wonderful marriage! Having said that, your post made me more grateful for my husband, because he has no expectations of me rising early and he is happy for me when I do anything relaxing- such as staying up reading etc. He understands witha baby and a toddler I’ve got my hands full. He never complains about the sink full of smelly dishes. He never comments on things laying around in clutter. He simply wants a hug when he gets home, always appreciates any food I prepare for him but never expects it (as in, half the week it’s free for all make it yourself- kids excluded- around here, a fact which probably has you even more grateful for your wife!). Every couple days, intimacy together isn’t expected but welcomed by both! When there’s the odd time where I’m too tired, he is understanding (whereas I usually am not if the roles are reversed!). I am extremely blessed!!

I love your comment of “being about my Fathers business.” It shed new light on that verse. And there is nothing I love more than,”Being about my Fathers business.”
It’s truly awesome to hear from Godly men. When my husband shares his thoughts and prayers with me it lights up my world. Bless you for your words.

How neat to see what a husband thinks about a Proverbs 31 wife. It is so hard to live up to all of this all of the time, but I try as hard as I can to fulfill all of this for my husband. It’s nice to know that you appreciate your wife living like that for you.

Thanks Brenda for reading! We all fall short, there is no condemnation in Christ. My wife doesn’t always meet this standard, but she strives like you. Continue to do your best and God will bless you and your husband. Be encouraged! E
