Now let me start off by saying that my definition of being a morning person and others, maybe even yours, may be totally different. A lot of people think that being a morning person means you wake up early in the morning without any fuss. The person is happy, energetic, and ready to tackle any task with a smile on their face. Then there is my definition of a morning person. Which is a person who wakes up early with purpose and to be productive.
If you are a part of that first group, that is awesome. However, most people, like myself, fall into the second group. I may not wake up with a smile on my face or want to talk to anyone for at least 30 minutes, but I do wake up with purpose. Regardless of the definition or how you wake up, there are four inspiring reasons we all should be a morning person.
#1) Becoming A Morning Person Helps You Attend To Your Needs Before Being Overwhelmed Others
This is a big one for us moms. I know it may be hard to admit sometimes, but our kids are needy. When they are babies, we understand it because they cannot do much for themselves. Yet the older my girls get the more I realize that they are still just as needy. It is just that the needs have changed. They may no longer need diaper changes or to be nursed, but there seems to always be a boo-boo to look at or library book or a sock be found.
So making sure you have the time to do the things you need to do for you before addressing the needs of others, especially your kids, is so important.
There have been many days when something as simple as brushing my teeth and taking a shower may not have happened if I did not do it before my girls got up. Practicing self-care is so important and taking time in the morning to do that is a great way to start the day.
#2) Becoming A Morning Person Will Give You Time For Quiet Time With God & Daily Devotions
Spending time daily with God, in His Word, and in prayer is so important. Making the time and having the space you need to do that is just as important. Getting up early allows you the time and the quiet you need for just that.
But when you pray, go into your [most] private room, and, closing the door, pray to your Father, Who is in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you in the open.
Matthew 6:6 (AMPC)
Whether it is in a room, on your back porch, or in a prayer corner, like I have, we all need that space and time. One thing that has helped me to be consistent with my quiet time in the morning is doing a daily devotion.

I am currently reading Priscilla Shirer’s devotional book “Awaken: (90 Days with the God who speaks” and to say this book is amazing is an understatement. This book has spoken to me in so many ways. I often share what I’ve read for the day with my husband, Eric, so it can speak to us both. Regardless of whether you read a daily devotion like this or just sit with worship music on, being a morning person allows you the time to do either.
3) Becoming A Morning Person Will Give You Time To Enjoy Your Coffee (or Tea)
Being able to enjoy your hot beverage of choice in the morning is so important. Whether you are a coffee or a tea person, no one wants to drink it room temperature or reheated. I am personally a tea person and my day just does not start right without it.
I used to make my cup of tea right when my girls were getting up in the morning and without fail, I rarely ever finished my tea hot. So by changing my morning routine and becoming a morning person, I was able to have my hot cup of tea the way I like it and still be ready for the day.
4) Becoming A Morning Person Will Help You To Stop Feeling Rushed & Rushing Your Kids
She’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast for her family and organizing her day.
Proverbs 31:15 (MSG)
Now, this was a big one for me. With three daughters, our mornings are always filled with a lot of emotion and loud voices. Before I became a morning person, I started to realize that from the minute they woke up it felt like we were fighting the clock. I would be pushing them through the morning and in turn, they would be pushing right back. Then eventually meltdowns and yelling would erupt. I knew something had to change and it had to start with me.
So I made two changes. The first one was for me to start getting up earlier so I had time to prepare myself for the day. This way once my girls were up, I could focus just on them and not be or feel rushed. The second change was creating this daily kids clothes organizer.
Now, we no longer have wardrobe dilemmas, everything is weather appropriate, and no one is looking for missing socks. However, we are still working on those missing library books.
Becoming a morning person may not be easy, but it can make such a huge difference in your daily productivity and peace of mind. There are still days when I cringe when I hear the alarm clock go off in the morning, but I know that refocusing my morning and starting off my day with God, self-care, a good cup of tea, and less stress is so worth it.
I’d love to hear what motivated you to become a morning person.
And if not, have I convinced you to at least give it a try in the comments!

Great post! The clothes organizer was a game changer before I became a SAHM. It brought peace to the mornings and on days my husband took the kids to the daycare, I didn’t have to worry about how they would look when I picked them up. Lol

Great points here! I love being a morning person!!

I’ve always been a morning person, but since becoming a mom, I admit that some mornings are easier than others!

As a morning person, I totally agree that it sets your day off on the right foot and better prepares you to handle the stresses and challenges of the day. I think your closet organizer for clothing each day is brilliant!

I love this perspective! I am definitely not a ‘wake up in the morning ready to conquer the world’ person, haha. I just had baby #3 about 6 weeks ago so a routine in the morning isn’t do-able right now, but I’m really looking forward to waking up early with a purpose, like you said.

I AM a morning person, and it is definitely for these reasons, should I choose to partake or not. The devotional time is especially important for me. Plus, it gives me more time for my tea (I’m not a coffee drinker, but I LOVE my tea).

Love this post, Ayanna! 🙂 I am a morning person and I always feel super accomplish by 12pm after completing my task. 🙂

This is great! I am a huge believer in waking up early to prepare for the day. <3

Great minds think alike, Jessica. 💕
I am so not a morning person, but you make an intriguing case. I get up and go, go, go, it would be nice to slow down a little before a busy day. Thank you for the inspiration!
No problem, Shannon. It is so easy to be on the go so much and forget to take the time we need for ourselves.
I’m the first to admit I am NOT a morning person but these are all such great reasons to change that! I also have a baby on the way and I’ve been told(repeatedly) my morning routine will change dramatically LOL!
I so wish I could become a morning person, but I feel like there’s no hope for me (as I sit here reading your post at 3:27 am). The only way I ever see the early morning hours is when I stay awake until 6 or 7 — which I actually do at times! You’ve shared some good points about the benefits of becoming an early bird, so maybe I’ll give it a go 🙂 Send me all the luck, though, because I’m going to need it!
Oh I so enjoyed this post! I’ve always tried to be a morning person because it always seems to make my day go by more smoothly and also puts me in a better mood!
I’m really trying to become a morning person, but its just so hard!! i think going to bed early and waking up with a positive attitude really helps steer you in the right direction but im definitely still working on it!
Yes to this! Once I became a busy mom I knew I needed to priororitize “me” time to make me a happier person:) . These are great tips!
I’ve started getting up before my kiddos for some me time this week!
I always have a better day when I wake up early to get things done before my girls. It’s actually getting up that’s the problem!
I was literally saying today that I need to become more of a morning person. I know I will feel a lot more put together.
I really enjoyed this post. I’ve been waking up very early for a new job I have, and I have found that it helps me become much more productive the rest of the day to get up and moving right away. I like the verse from Matthew you you posted…recently I stopped doing my prayer journaling and devotionals in my quiet space and started doing it in the family room. It’s inspired me to seek that quiet time once again.
I always feel better when I get up early, but it’s a constant struggle because I’m a night person by nature! I try to go to bed as early as I can so I can get in more “me time” in the morning pre-chaos 🙂
Number one and number three all the way! I feel like I’m a much better mother/human if I wake up before everyone else!
I feel like I get so much more done on my early mornings. I have time to clean up, write, and get homework done too.
Ayanna!!! I have been journaling or as I call it morning pages and prayer and my friend…it is life changing!!!
Love this! I used to be such a morning person but now I can’t help myself but sleep in! I need to adjust back into the habit of waking up early again!
I wake up pretty early but only to get myself and others ready right away. I should wake up a little earlier and have some peaceful, non-stressed time to myself!
Great ideas! I’ll never be a morning person but should be haha.
Ayanna, I love it!
Mornings are definitely my favorite time of day. I love being up before the rest of the house, its quiet, its calm and i’m at peace. Though I am definitely the latter type of morning person. I don’t want to talk to anyone for at least an hour. One of my roommates told me once, that it took a few months for her to learn that I wasn’t mad at her every morning, I just didn’t want to talk. haha
And girl, that clothes organizer! Genius plan! I’m not even a mom but I might implement that for myself;)
These are great tips! For these reasons alone I wish I was more of a morning person, but I just cannot seem to get up earlier. Any tips on how to motivate yourself to get out of bed when there’s not an immediate need to?
I have been trying to wake up a little earlier (I started on Monday), so this gives me more motivation to really keep trying. Thank you!
I love to get up early to see the sunrise and have quiet time. If I don’t I feel a big bit of the day is wasted and I seem to be always catching up.
I love the this idea and am already a morning person. I completely agree with wanting to be productive – I just feel better throughout the rest of the day knowing I already accomplished so much.
Very good tips. When my kids were little mornings were always better when I got up and started the day peacefully, and then got them out of bed. Very good ideas.
So many great tips, taking me time is so important especially when the rest of the day is so hectic
Great advice! I’m noticing I’m becoming more of a morning person the older I get! 😂
Wonderful post (and beautiful site btw)! I definitely love the feeling of not being rushed first thing in the morning. Waking up early has completely changed the way my days go. I’m not as stressed and I get started on a much higher note 🙂
You said this so beautifully. I am NOT a morning person, but I am trying to be a wake up early with a purpose person, haha. I will have to look into that devotional. I loved reading her parts in Kingdom Woman.
I love the clothing organizer for your kids! It definitely helps them choose seasonally appropriate clothing. Having enough time for yourself in the morning is huge too. I have found that when I am ready early the whole morning is much smoother for myself and my children.
I really get frustrated with the feeling of being rushed and the mornings that I am up earlier is always more peaceful. The kids’ wardrobe organizer would be a game-changer in my house. I have to get this started right away.
Love, love, love this article! We must speak the same language! I am already a morning person but enjoyed reading about why you are one!
Our mornings are much like yours were. So I started getting up 15 minutes earlier and it made a fantastic difference. Your onto something here! 🙂
I feel like I CAN be a morning person if I need to, though I do love sleeping in. haha It’s definitely handy to get up and get things done in the morning though.

I would love more time for my tea. And self care. Might have to wake up a bit earlier.
This is great I am definitely not a morning person, I could use and extra 30 minutes just to sit down and relax in the morning but waking up at 5:30 am is so early lol love your tips
