Being a mom is one of the most rewarding and hardest jobs you can have. Being responsible for the health and well-being of another person, while also trying to give and teach them things they need to one day be more independent can be a daunting task.
As a mom to three girls, I have a front-row to all things girl. Along with the different situations and challenges so many of us face as moms.
Every season and age our kids go through brings a different set of joys, experiences, and challenges.
For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NLT)
Some things you do not see coming, and then there are others that you know are coming and can prepare for. One of those seasons that we can prepare both our daughters and ourselves for is the tween years. The tween years are those precious years from 9-12 years old. Where they will experience a lot of physical, emotional, and social changes.
These years can be overwhelming to us all. Yet with the right tools, attitude, and prayer we cannot just get through them, but thrive. Here are five books every tween girl needs.

1) The Care and Keeping of You 1 & 2
The changes our tween girls go through can be a lot to handle and understand for both them and you. One of the books I have found that has helped my daughter and I not just understand the changes, but also allow us to talk about them without feeling uncomfortable is “The Care and Keeping You”.
These are books that a friend of mine recommended and I will forever be grateful to her for them. The newer books have now been divided into two books, which I loved. These two books help to speak both our younger tween and our older tweens in just the right way. The Care of Keeping You 1 for Younger Girls goes through a lot of the basics of body changes, care, and more. While The Care of Keeping You 2 for Older Girls goes through some of the basic as well, but adds more about personal care, social issues, and more.
I gave my daughter The Care of Keeping You 1 for Younger Girls and The Care of Keeping You 2 for Older at different times based on her questions, maturity, and when I felt she was ready. Both she loved and still references from time to time.
2) A Smart Girls Guide: Middle School
I do not know about you, but I was not ready to have a middle schooler. I have always looked at my girls as my babies and that changed when my oldest was preparing for middle school. The social changes that I knew were coming with middle school was something that I knew I needed to prepare us both for.
A book that helped us successfully make that transition was A Smart Girls Guide: Middle School.
This book both explains and gives different tips to help your tween girl navigate the new world of middle school. A Smart Girls Guide: Middle School is a great book to help your tween girl know what different things to expect and a great tool to help her more confidently manage many of the new and different things.
I gave this to my daughter as a part of her graduation gift from elementary school and it is probably one of the best gifts I could have given her.
3)Just Between Us: Mother & Daughter: A No-Stress, No-Rules Journal
Giving our tween girls information and tools that will help them to understand and successfully navigate the different physical, emotional, and social changes they will experience is great. Yet we also need a way to get them to talk to us. Not just about the changes they are experiencing, but just to better our relationship with them. One way to do that, that was also recommended to me by another friend, is the Just Between Us: Mother & Daughter: A No-Stress, No-Rules Journal.
This journal combines a mix of writing prompts and questions while coupled with open space for you just to share whatever you like. Just Between Us: Mother & Daughter: A No-Stress, No-Rules Journal is great gift that keeps giving to both you and your daughter.
This a great way to take the pressure off of having to always have “talks” with your tween girl. While also allowing you to learn things about each other. I love reading my daughter’s responses and learning things about her I may have not known any other way.
4) Bible
While the physical, emotional, and social well-being of our tweens is very important, we cannot forget about the spiritual needs of our girls. One of the best books for all our tween girls is the Bible.
In order for our girls to grow in their faith and their own personal relationship with God, we have to make sure we are supporting and encouraging them to read God’s Word.
How can a young person stay pure?
By obeying your word.
Psalms 119:9 (NLT)
Encouraging them to read and know more about the Bible will give them the best tools and book you could ever give them to help them navigate not just their tween life but all of life.
5) The Bible Made Easy- For Kids
For our tween girls, navigating and understanding the Bible will not be easy. If I can be honest, even as a not so tween girl, I do not always find it easy to navigate or understand different things in the Bible. So one book I found that has helped my tween girl and I have even found very helpful is The Bible Made Easy- For Kids.
This book gives information on how the Bible is organized, gives overviews of some of the books, illustrations, and topical information. Coupled with her Bible, The Bible Made Easy- For Kids will help your tween to better navigate her Bible, gain a better understanding, and learn more about herself and God.
Navigating the tween girl years is not always easy, but it can be done. With these 5 books, you and your tween girl can not only navigate them, but successfully make it through while learning, growing, and having fun along the way.
I’d love to know what tips or tools you use, will use, or have used
to help you navigate the tween girl years in the comments!

I’m so glad, Kari. Navigating middle school is not easy and having tools to help our kids is so important.
I LOVE the idea behind “Just Between Us!” I keep a journal with one of my daughters. We started it when she was about 11 and she is 27 now; and while we don’t exchange it more than once a year these days, it is one of the most precious things we have.
What a great list! I love the journal idea
These are all great suggestions! My daughter is almost a tween, so glad I came across this!!

My mom gave me some excellent book suggestions when I was a young girl growing up, and I still remember the principles in the books today! What an impressionable time for young ladies as they learn how to conduct themselves in a proper manner. So glad you included the Bible in your book list!
These are all great books for girls to read!
What a great list! One of my daughters is about to enter the tween stage, so I’ll definitely be having her read some of these!
She will love them, Lisa!
