Motherhood will grow you and stretch you in so many expected and unexpected ways. Your capacity to love and show love grows immensely. When you have your first child, you cannot imagine loving another person more. When God blessed you with this little person or people to care for, love, and nurture, it is like nothing else in the world. Yet, if you do have more kids, you know that that love just grows.
As our kids get older, how we show them love can change. Our kids may still love our hugs and kisses, but they also start to like receiving gifts. The joy on your child’s face when they receive a gift from you for something they either really wanted or if perfect for them is like nothing else. It is a joy that is not only seen, but also felt.
A joyful heart is good medicine,
Proverbs 17:22a (ESV)
Whether it is a just because gift or it’s a holiday, like Valentines Day, their birthday, or Christmas. The opportunities to bless our kids with special gifts are endless. Yet at times the ideas and our resources are not always.
For me, with three daughters that have very different interests and wants it can be hard at times to pick gifts for them. Then when I think about all the grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends who love on our girls as well. I realize how blessed they are with an abundance of love and stuff. So making sure to not just get them another thing that will quickly be forgotten or that they already have is not always easy.
Then when I also think about how important stewardship and budgeting is in our home, that adds another dynamic. My husband, Eric, and I are very open with our girls about budgeting and only spending what we have to spend. So although we would like to give them the world, we know financially we cannot. As well as not wanting our girls to become materialistic and ungrateful.
Trying to find that balance in parenting is not always easy. So I am always looking for ways to help us all find a better balance and I think I found one.

My daughter turns 10 tomorrow. This is a perfect gift! I feel neglectful sometimes that I don’t spend enough time just being with my kids and making memories. The older they get, the more I realize that time is running out! Something like this will hold me to it! (does that sound bad?) Thank you for sharing your ideas!

I felt that way then too, Catherine, and feel the same way today.

Making them look as real as possible was definitely apart of the fun for me creating them, Jill. Along with having a gift that was non-candy or toy.

I LOVE this idea. Lol i made one for my husband once, and found it two moves later…I have a feeling my kids would be more on top of redeeming the coupons than my husband was. Actually, I could see myself having to set a rule, like “only one coupon a day” for them. Love it!
