In the midst of our busy lives, it is so easy for us to get so focused on getting things done that we become disconnected. Not just from those around us or the purpose behind our to do lists. We can also become disconnected from God, even in the midst of doing things for Him. We can all find ourselves disconnected. Needing to reconnect with God in different ways and at different points in our lives.
There have been times when I was serving, giving and growing in my faith and my relationship with God had no bounds. Then there have been those other times when I look less to God and more to myself. Focused on how I am going to get something done or what my next steps should be. There have also been times when I looked to my husband, Eric, to be the answer or give me the answer I am looking for.
We have all done this. Started to lean more on our own abilities and understanding. Or looked for others to give us the answers or assurances we need that can only come from God. It is in those times and other times when we notice ourselves seeking or feeling disconnected. With these five intentional and simple steps, we can both reconnect with God and grow in our faith.
1) Reconnecting With God Starts With Prayer
Prayer is often where we start in so many different situations. The same can be said when we are feeling disconnected from God. Prayer is simple, powerful, and can be done anywhere at any time. Prayer also allows us to do two very important things. It allows us to share our hearts, thoughts, and needs with God. While also allowing God to do the same with us.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
James 4:8a (NKJV)
Prayer is a conversation, not a monologue. God wants to be in relationship and in communication with us.
I know for me, when I have felt the most disconnected from God were the times when praying was at the end of my daily to-dos. Then if I did get around to it, it was out of a sense of obligation not to truly connect. I was just simply checking it off my list.
By looking at prayer as a get to and not a have to, we cannot only reconnect with God but grow. Grow in our desire to pray and in our relationship with God.
2) Self-Evaluation Is Also A Must
This is where we have to be honest with ourselves. Looking to see what are the ways and when are the times when we are feeling the most disconnected from God. Are there things we are either doing or not doing that cause us to feel disconnected or draw us away from God?
Examine and test and evaluate your own selves to see whether you are holding to your faith and showing the proper fruits of it.
2 Corinthians 13:5a (AMPC)
This look in the mirror moment is often the hardest, but also the most revealing. When we peel back the layers, we realize we are often making choices, whether big or small, intentionally or unintentionally, that draw us away from God. God is always there listening, willing, and wanting to draw nearer to us.
By taking an honest look at ourselves and the effort, or lack thereof, we are putting into our relationship with God, we can often reveal other steps we need to take or stop taking to reconnect with God. One of the next steps you may need to take is fasting.
3) Do A Fast
This is something that so many of us do at the beginning of the year with our churches, family, or friends, but rarely do this at any other time of the year. We also often focus solely on fasting from food or certain kinds of food. Yet, fasting from the things that may be drawing us away from God will actually help us to draw closer to Him.
“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
Joel 2:12 (ESV)
Over the years, I have found myself fasting doing so many different types of fasts. I have done 3-day food fasts and only had juice and water. Eric and I do those a few times a year, especially when we have a big decision to make or big life changes are occurring. This allows us to draw closer to God and get the guidance and direction we may need.
I have also taken 21-day fasts from different things. Whether it is the different types of social media, the music I listen to, television, or the types of books I read. You would be amazed at how reconnected with God you become and the more time you have to pray when you remove some of the distractions from your life.
4) Start A Daily Devotional
There are times when you may not know what to pray or reading your Bible seems daunting. This is where seeking a little help will not just help, but maybe just the answer you need to reconnect with God.
But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.
Psalms 1:2 (NLT)
I love starting my day off with a devotional. One of the things I love most about devotionals is that they come in so many forms, have so many different topics, and can be as long or as short as you want them. There are times when a 2-minute devotional will do. Then there are other times when taking your time to read, write, and pray is what need.
Regardless of the time needed or the topic it focuses on, devotionals are great ways to draw you closer to God, help you reconnect, and grow in different areas. If you are looking for a new devotional, check out the post on my top five favorite devotionals.
5) Join A Small Group
Community is such an important part of your faith. So when you are feeling disconnected, being in community with other believers is so important.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some,
but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see
Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
The options and locations for small groups nowadays are almost endless. Whether you attend one at your church, at a friend’s church, or even online. Being in a small group allows you to not just reconnect with God, but also allows you to connect with others. Some of my best friends have come from me joining a small group.
Our need to be connected with God and others is so ingrained in who we are and how God created us. That is why when we are feeling disconnected from God or others, like our husbands or kids, we have to take the necessary steps to reconnect. Relationships are a two-way street, so with these 5 simple steps, you can get the reconnection with God you are seeking.
I’d love to know how you stay connected with God in the comments!

For sometime now I have felt lost. Like I don’t know whether I am coming or going. But there is a text that constantly comes to me when I am overtaken by this feeling and it is “…seek ye first the kingdom of God and all other things will be added on to you ” This article is confirmation for me once again. I find myself in this state quite often because of inconsistency, please help me pray to overcome.

I will definitely join you in praying the focus, desire, and consistency to seek God daily in new and powerful ways, Josette.
Thanks for this reminder list. I spotted at least one that I need to focus on.
I’m so glad this was able to help you reconnect with God in a personal way, Kris.
Great tips! Thanks for sharing!
I love these ideas! We often overlook self-awareness in this process! Being aware of what’s happening inside helps us to engage with God more honestly.
It is so easy to get lazy with my relationship with God. Thanks for these simple daily tips!

Yes, Sarah. We switched over to virtual as well. I miss seeing everyone live, but I love still being able to connect and study God’s Word together.

It is so good to be a part of a small group. I hate that we can’t meet right now, but we do use zoom now. God cannot be stopped despite the quarantine.
Loving these ideas! I’m in major need of doing at least a few. Really like the idea of a morning prayer and maybe short devotional at nighttime

Amazing tips Ayanna! I think they are all essential to experience the fullness of Christ.
It seems that fasting is underutilized in our society. It is such a powerful way to reconnect with God and bring immense blessings into our lives. Millions worldwide will be fasting this Sunday, March 29th, in behalf of the nations of the world as we deal with our current worldwide crisis. We each can pray and fast that the leaders of the nations will respond with wisdom as they deal with this crisis, that the peoples of the nation will feel peace in place of anxiety, that our economy will recover, and that we as a people will return to God. There is so much power in a simple fast!
