Wow, what a year 2020 has been already! I can remember setting goals at the beginning of the year excited about all the new 20/20 vision I had for the year. Everything started out looking and feeling so hopeful, then the world entered into a pandemic and everything seemed to be put on pause. Yet, do your goals have to be put on pause as well? Or do you just need to refresh your goals?
The idea of refreshing your goals is not something that applies to just 2020, but something that is so necessary for us all to do every year. Just because you set and wrote down your goals in January, does not mean that they are so set in stone that nothing should change.
Now that we have passed that halfway point in the year, it is as good of a time as any to revisit and refresh our goals. There are so many reasons that your goals may need a refresh. I have found there are three main things we all face over time that should prompt us all to refresh our goals.
When Things Change
Change is a word that could be used to describe all areas of your life. Nothing ever stays the same, so why should all of your goals? Now, this does not mean that you do not stay committed to the goals you have set. Or that you let obstacles and setbacks that you may have had to cause you to change all your goals.
Yet, it is important that during times of change, you revisit your goals and refresh them where needed. Refreshing your goals is not all about changing them, but more about refining and realigning. Some of the goals you set at the beginning of the year may have been great at that point, but what if things in your life have changed and those goals no longer fit? Or what if you already achieved that goal?
When things around you change and as you accomplish each goal you have already set, this gives you the perfect opportunity to refresh your goals.
Another reason you may need to refresh your goals has to do with change, but less about what is going on around you and more about what is going within.
When You Have Changed, Maybe Your Goals Need To As Well
Whether that is your perspective, your outlook, or even your wants. Over time, we change and grow just as much as things around us. Therefore it is so important to make sure we are refreshing our goals as we change as well.
I can remember when I first decided I wanted to be a stay at home mom and step away from my career as a pharmacist. Not only was that a big change for me personally and my family, but it was also a big change in my perspective.
The way I looked at and my thoughts on certain things began to change. Some of the goals that I set at the beginning of that year no longer fit. So I needed to not give up my goals, but refresh them to fit who I was then.
Change, whether around you or within, is not the only thing that can cause us to need to refresh our goals.
God Often Shows You Something New Prompting The Need To Refresh Your Goals
Spending daily time with God is something that is so important to your faith and your growth. It gives you time and space to not just grow your relationship with God, but also for God to reveal new things to you.
Wise men and women are always learning,
always listening for fresh insights.
Proverbs 18:25 (MSG)
These new things and fresh insights can also cause you to need to refresh your goals.
There have been so many times in all of our lives that God has shown or revealed something to us that totally changes everything for us. Whether it is your situation, perspective, or your desires.
For me, that seems to happen in every new season of my life. From me deciding to no longer attend college in California, but instead go to New Orleans. Where I would later meet my husband. Or agreeing with my husband to uproot our family and move from Georgia to Massachusetts.
Where I have grown to love New England in ways I never thought possible. All things that made no logical sense to me at that time. Yet were totally times God was showing me something new. Showing me things that caused me to shift my thoughts, perspective, and my goals.
Change and new is definitely not always easy, whether it has to do with the things going on around us, within us, or something God seems to have His hand in. Yet, like with so many things that we go through in life, we have choices.
We can fight against or find ways to move with. One way to move with and adjust to the changes in our lives is refreshing our goals accordingly. Fresh goals can help to give fresh vision and a fresh outlook while giving you the opportunity to take the rest of your year beyond anything you could have previously thought or imagined.
I’d love to know what goals of yours need to be refreshed in the comments!
