Who hasn’t heard when things get hard someone says ‘just trust God’? Or someone says “just have a little faith” when things seem to be overwhelming? We all have. While both may be true, it is a lot easier said than done. There are times when having faith and trusting God is hard.
I remember when I bought this ‘Trust God + Chill’ t-shirt from Beacon Threads. I bought it for two reasons. One was because it was cute and I have fallen in love with message and graphic t-shirts over the last few months. I am usually a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl anyway. So these types of t-shirts take my outfits up a notch and say something without me having to say anything.
I also bought the shirt because I needed the reminder. The last few months have been filled with a lot more downs than ups for so many of us. We all have these types of seasons and can find it hard to see and trust God in the midst of it all.
So whenever you find yourself at one of those hard times, remember these five things.
1) Remember There Will Be Trouble
God never promised us that life would be filled with unicorns and rainbows. Things are not always going to go according to our plan or guaranteed to have a happy ending.
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 (NLT)
When we remember that trials are a part of life, but God is there with us in the midst of it and has already overcome it all. Then trusting God is easier. You can look past the problem to the promises of God.
2) Remember God Is Always With You
It is so easy in the midst of our busy lives and the storms of life to feel like we are alone. To feel like God is not with you, and or does not see you or your troubles.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
Yet, it is so important in that in hard times to remember that God is there with you. You may feel like you are alone, but you are not. Your feelings are not facts.
Remembering the truth of God’s promise that He is there with you is key to keep trusting God even when times are hard.
3) Remember God Does Not Change
We change and the seasons in our lives change. However, God does not.
I have found it is often the hardest for me to trust God when everything around me seems to be out of my control and constantly changing. As a person who loves lists and having things in order, change is not always easy to accept. Then when I become unsure about what my next step will even be, it becomes even harder.
Yet, God and His Word remain unchanged and true.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV)
Hard times, although they can last longer than we would like, they do not last forever. So holding onto the truth that in the middle of a storm that is ever changing, God is right there with you unchanged. Will help you to trust God even in the hard times.
4) Remember God Gives Peace
I can remember when we were moving from Georgia to Massachusetts. I had a peace about moving at first. Yet once it became hard selling our house in Georgia and finding a new house in Massachusetts, that peace started to disappear. I became overwhelmed with all my to-dos and trying to get settled before the start of the next school year.
Although it was hard, I knew God was calling us to move. So even with struggle, I had to choose to trust God even though I felt overwhelmed. It was when I took that step of faith to trust in that hard time that I received His peace once again.
You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)
A peace that only comes when you are putting our faith and trust in Him. Despite what we feel, see, or the things going on around us. So if you are seeking a peace and a calm in the midst of a storm, seek God. Trust God to give you what only He can.
5) Remember Not To Focus On What You Can See
Taking your eyes and focus off of the things around you and your troubles helps you to keep your thoughts and focus on the right thing, God. That focus and trust then gives you a peace that defies all understanding and keeps you while you endure and overcome your hard times.
For we walk by faith, not by sight
2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)
Walking by faith allows you to trust God when things seem impossible. Walking by faith allows you to trust when everyone around you questions how you could be at peace during this hard time.
Our eyes, like our feelings, can often get us off track and not give us all the facts. So walking by faith and not by what we see is a must to trusting God at all times.
So even in the hard times, remembering that although hard times are inevitable that an ever-present, unchanging, and peace-giving God is always there helps you to trust Him the midst of it all.
I’d love to know what you have to remember when times are hard in the comments!

I especially love #4 and 5! I am constantly reminding myself, that just because I can’t see what God is doing, or I don’t feel a peace or ease about something, doesn’t mean he’s not still working behind the scenes. So important to remember that we need to walk by faith, not by sight. 🙂

Yes, Barbara. Walking by faith is key.
You have so many great points here! It amazes me that we all bad times come ’round and ’round, yet we are surprised every time. Love your number #1 and #5. Bad times are always easier to manage when my focus is on God instead. Great post!
Our focus is so important, Ashley. Thank you and I’m so glad this was able to speak to you.
Such a great post! Bad times will happen but better times will always come around 🙂
Thank you, Ruth, and better times are definitely around the corner.
Preach! Trusting God is hard at times, thank you for the reminders! There is nothing like the peace He brings!
I’m so glad this was able to speak to you, Robbi. There is nothing like that peace.
I love # 1 because it really helps to not be surprised by hard times. The Bible keeps reminding me we will have them but God already knew about it and has a plan.
Remembering to not be surprised is key for me as well, Sarah.
Amen girl! God is always with us. He does not change and yes we will have trouble, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
There is definitely light at the end of the tunnel, Sacha.
Thank you for sharing! With everything going on in our world, it’s hard to remain hopeful and encouraged, but this post is a reminder that even though life looks very different for everyone than it did this time last year, God is still good and He is neverchanging. Thank you for this reminder today!
I’m so glad this could encourage you right when you needed, Ro.
Such beautiful truths to go back to over and over again. Thank you for this beautiful reminder!
We all need little reminders like this from time to time, Evangeline.
